Chemical-Free Parks–Ask the City
Question:
If Harbon Park is chemical free, why can't every park be chemical free?
Answer:
"The majority of the parks system is under an integrated pest management system. Large scale blanket spraying of trees and turf has been replaced by spot spraying small infestations to limit the need for large applications. Some areas that are consistently invaded with undesirable plant species require annual treatment to suppress these infestations. Chemical-free parks over time became unsightly and difficult to manage. It would not be in the best interest of the public to have a full-scale parks system under this management. It is our duty to protect the infrastructure of the system including the desirable plants that a city park entails. The Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic is a great example of the prevention of tree loss by utilizing chemical applications appropriately."
