I have lived in many different places in the past, both big and small; I am often asked if I miss the big cities and I tell people no with one exception. I do miss the plethora of different diverse restaurants that a big city has to offer. Other than that I love being in Laramie. Having said that, it is always nice to see new restaurants come to town and we have had two great additions in the past month; Boomers BBQ and Fat Katz Pizza Shak. I went and visited both to check out the restaurants as whole and of course try some of their food. Here is my opinion on Laramie's newest restaurants.

Having lived in the south, I always hoped we would get a nice BBQ restaurant in Laramie. Now we have one, Boomers BBQ, which opened September 14th. The owners, Mike & Michelle, have lived in Arkansas and Oklahoma in the past so they call their BBQ Arklahoma style! Most recently however they lived in Kemmerer, WY and decided to retire, move to Laramie and start their own restaurant. Boomer's atmosphere is nice and very fitting for a BBQ joint, with decorations from both the Wyoming Cowboys and Oklahoma Sonners. One of the nice things about Boomers BBQ is the size of the restaurant; it has tons of tables and even a family dining room that you can reserve for family get togethers or business functions, etc...
Now on to the best part, the food! Boomers serves all kinds of meats including brisket, pulled pork, turkey, ribs, and chicken. Their meats are of course cooked in a large smoker for up to 12 1/2 hours depending on the meat. When asked what set the restaurant aside from others in town Mike and Michelle had the following to say:
Everything we do, we do the hard way, everything is made from scratch.
This makes a huge difference from the BBQ Sauce to the salad dressings to the sides, it is all home made. You don't find this much anymore because it is a lot of work, but this is what you can expect at Boomers. I sat down for a meal and they did not disappoint! The meat was nice and juicy, the BBQ sauce was great, and the sides were delicious; by the way they do have six signature BBQ sauces made from scratch. Michelle mentioned to me that at many BBQ restaurants you see people push away the sides and just go for the meat, but they love the fact that at their restaurant the side dishes come back completely empty. They make the following sides from recipes Mike and Michelle have spent a very long time perfecting; Coleslaw, Potato salad, Husker Hash (corn bread), Green beans  (a huge hit), & Cinnamon Apples as well. For desert Michelle highly recommends that you give their bread pudding a try but if you are not a fan of that they also have cobblers and German chocolate cake.
From the sounds of things I am not the only one who has enjoyed this new restaurant. Apparently people have been coming back time and time again already and they have only been open a little more than a month, that's always a good sign. If you are in a hurry the restaurant always has take out as well and they are FAST! You can call in your order, but you really only need to walk in because they will have your food ready "faster than the McDonald's Drive Thru!" Pricing is pretty reasonable for BBQ place. A sandwich and side runs about $9 and a bigger plate runs up to about $15. Take my word for the food and let us know what you think in the comments below!

While we already have a fair share of places in Laramie to go and grab pizza, Fat Katz Pizza Shak definitely brings something new to the lunch or dinner table. Fat Katz owners, Mike & Tim, grew up working in a pizza place located in Byron, Wyoming near Cody. They were working on a business plan in a high school class at that time and from that idea Fat Katz Pizza Shak was born, opening in Laramie at the end of September. The name actually comes from one of their co-workers who would always say "check you fat katz later" as he left work. The biggest question that I had going into Fat Katz was what would set them apart from any ordinary pizza joint in town. Their sauce is rich and kind of tangy, which gives their pizza a unique flavor that is REALLY good. Another thing that sets Fat Katz apart is that they do not skimp on the cheese and other ingredients; they also buy everything as locally as possible to ensure freshness. Most of their recipes are actually from Byron with a hint of New York style mixed in as well. Fat Katz also sells pizza by the slice in case your family all wants something different or you are just stopping by for a quick lunch, which is very convenient. It is also idea for the hungry college student since they are located right across the street from the dorms. Other items on the menu include salads, cheese bread, bread sticks, and wings. I was not a huge fan of the bread sticks, but the pizza more than made up for them. If you don't like something Mike stressed that they want your comments as they have comment cards throughout the restaurant so that you can let them know what you thought. They are very focused on their customers which is nice to see. A 14" pizza runs $13.75 at Fat Katz and some of their specialty pizzas are a little more spendy. They also have a good special; 2 slices of pizza, bread sticks, and a soft drink for $5.50 which is pretty reasonable. Mike recommends giving their chicken Parmesan or combo pizzas a try when you come in to give them a try. The restaurant is also introducing Italian Cream Sodas and delivery service very soon as well. You can call in an order and pick it up in the mean time by calling (307) 745-7777. You can check out reviews for Fat Katz on Yelp, but if you like pizza make sure to give Fat Katz Pizza Shak a shot!
