The University of Wyoming Art Museum is inviting the public to come celebrate the summer solstice at their annual event Thursday, June 21.

The solstice celebration will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will include appetizers and live music. Visitors who arrive before noon will be able to see a unique architectural feature where a single beam of sunlight shines through a solar tube in the ceiling of the Rotunda Gallery and illuminates the 1923 Peace dollar that is set into the center of the gallery’s floor. The event only happens at noon on the summer solstice.

Visitors will also be able to use special telescopes on the terrace to safely view the surface of the sun until 1:30 p.m. Members of the Laramie Astronomical Society and Space Observers with community astronomer Ray Martin have set up the telescopes.

Children will be able to participate in free make-and-take art activities, including light-sensitive fabric and reflective sculptures, courtesy of the UW Art Museum. Activities will end at 2:30 p.m.
