I heard from a friend that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Laramie was holding a cardboard sled derby up at the Happy Jack sledding hill, and I had to check it out and share this neat event with everyone. Best of all it is open to the public, so grab a group of friends or take your kids up to participate for an fun filled day outside. I have seen this done at some of the bigger ski resorts before, but I had no idea there was anything like it around Laramie.

The Sigma Chi fraternity from the University of Wyoming started this event four years ago and have kept it going ever since. Teams for the event consist of between two and six participants who build the sleds and race them down the sledding hill. This year's sled derby takes place on Saturday, January 28th, from 10AM to 1PM at the Happy Jack Recreation Area. Sign ups start at 10AM and the actual racing gets going at 11AM. The event is free to Big Brother Big Sisters participants and $10 for the general public. Food and hot chocolate will also be provided to all racers by Sigma Chi at the event to keep everyone warm and energized for the exciting races throughout the day. Once all of the races are over, prizes will be awarded for the race winner as well as for best sled and most team spirit. Michael McNamee from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Laramie told us that:

It’s definitely our favorite event of the year and everyone has a great time. All proceeds go to support Big Brothers Big Sisters.

If you are interested in participating in the event, registration forms can be obtained at the Big Brothers Big Sisters offices in Laramie or from the Sigma Chai fraternity. For more information on the event you can contact Michael McNamee at (307) 742-2227 or by E-Mail.
