University of Wyoming Police Department is cautioning the campus about a person impersonating a police officer who allegedly stole electronic items from a campus building.

The theft was reported Friday morning after a tall, thin man with a black bag came into the Engineering Building saying he was a police officer investigating a theft of a laptop computer from one of the offices. A graduate student let him into the office, not knowing that the person was not a policeman.

The UWPD advises that if a person comes into an office and is not readily identifiable as a police officer, you should ask for a badge, the department name and the name of the officer; or you also can call the UWPD at (307) 766-5179 to ask if a police officer is actually in the building investigating.

Campus police also urge employees to make sure their offices are locked when leaving and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
