In light of recent thefts of computer equipment from the Engineering Building, the University of Wyoming Police Department offers the following suggestions to prevent and mitigate the impact of property crimes on campus:

  • Record serial numbers and Mac addresses for all desktops, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices.
  • Remove personal property from offices.
  • Keep offices and other spaces secure when not in use or otherwise supervised.
  • Secure desktops and other property when feasible.
  •  Use technology (downloads/software/passwords) to lock and safeguard electronic devices.
  • Regularly back up data and store it in a separate, secure location.

Opportunistic thefts often occur on campus during the last few weeks of a semester, so it’s a good idea at this point in the year for everyone to be mindful of this problem, there’s no way to eliminate all property crimes, but following these steps gives us the best chance to keep impacts to a minimum.
