If you are an American Idol fan, then you probably know that a new series of the national hit TV series kicked off a brand new season last night on FOX. What you might not know is that the University of Wyoming hosts and Idol series of their own that is pretty entertaining as well. Friday Night Fever announced to us late yesterday afternoon that they are now accepting applications for prospective contestants to audition for the UW Idol series. You do have to be a University of Wyoming student to try out, but the great news is that anyone can come out to watch the series when it premiers. Traditionally the competition is held on Friday nights in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium and the winner receives a prize of $1,000, however this has not been confirmed to us for this year's event.

Just as the auditions for the actual TV show can be rather comical, the UW series promises not to disappoint, and everyone in the community is invited to watch. Friday Night Fever presents UW Idol Open Call Auditions at 9 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2011, in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. The first 100 applicants who have submitted an application to the Campus Activities Center before the posted deadline at 12:00 pm on Friday, January 27, 2011, will be guaranteed an audition slot during the open call auditions. In the case of receiving fewer than 100 applications, those students who have not submitted an application will be offered an audition on a first-come, first-serve basis, with time allowing at the event. Participants will sing a 30 second a cappella song of their choice. 15 students will be selected to perform at the semi-finals on Friday, February 3. A William Hung Award will be given to the “most creative” audition. Check out the video of American Idol's top 10 worst auditions below to get in the mood for a good laugh as UW Idol approaches.
