The Banff Mountain Film Festival is once again coming to the University of Wyoming campus.  This long-awaited event generally draws hundreds of students and community members. The film being shown at UW is called the “Best of the Fest” film, which is a compilation of the winning films of the nine-day film festival held annually in Banff, Canada.

Since its inception, the Banff Mountain Film Festival has accepted over 5,000 films to be judged and potentially included in the annual “Best of the Fest” film. The film covers a variety of thrill-seekers’ adventures around the world. From mountaineering in the Himalayas to climbing in Patagonia, or base jumping in China to kayaking in Alaska, this film will take you to the edge of your seat and the cliff. (And it will take you over it too. Hopefully just the cliff, not your seat.)

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is also well-known around the world, not only because of the amazing outdoor feats that it records, but also how it records them.  Of the many adventure films produced in a year, the Banff Mountain Film Festival arguably has the best cinematography.   This comes as no surprise considering some of the major sponsors of the Banff Mountain Film Festival include National Geographic, which is long-known for their amazing photography, as well as the North Face.  However, the Banff Mountain Film Festival has not always enjoyed the international prestige it has today.  When it first began in 1967, it was only a small group of climbers sitting around retelling and reshowing their past year’s feats.  Today, however, the Banff Mountain Film festival is regarded as the “key element in the mountain community.”

Make sure you don’t miss this exciting event held this Wednesday and Thursday (February 22nd and 23rd) at 7pm in the Arts and Sciences Auditorium.  Take advantage of this free event since tickets normally cost $20 per person.  Need a little convincing?  Take a peek at this trailer (Although you only need to watch the first two minutes or so, unless you want to see ads from all the sponsors.)
