Due to Forecasted Cold, ACSD#1 Hosting Virtual School Day Monday

Out of an abundance of caution, Albany County School District #1 will be closing schools and hosting a virtual school day on Monday, Jan. 15.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, bitter-cold temperatures and periods of strong winds will lead to dangerous wind chills through early Tuesday, with Laramie seeing minimum wind chills of -20 to -10 degrees on Monday.

Here's a look at forecast wind chill temperatures for a handful of locations across our area. Dangerous cold is expected for our area in two surges: the first occurring during the day Friday, and the second occurring Sunday night or Monday, which will spread cold to higher elevations west of the Laramie range. Wind Chill Warnings are in effect for all areas along and east of the Laramie range 5PM Friday through 6AM Monday.

Arctic air incoming! Over the next several days, expect extremely cold air as an arctic air mass sits over much of the region. Not only will both high and low temperatures be extremely cold, but dangerously cold wind chills are also expected. In this graphic the temperatures in the box represent either the forecast high or low temperature (low temperature is at night/early morning; high temperature is during the day/afternoon). The color of the box will equate to the forecast wind chills during that time period. For example, tonight, the forecast low temperature in Cheyenne is -19°F with wind chills between -40 and -30°F. Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Avoid outside activities if possible. If you must be outside, dress appropriately and bundle up!

ACSD#1 says elementary students will be given a blizzard bag containing work for the day, and secondary schools will attend class virtually using the Canvas Portal.

Students needing breakfast or lunch can pick up breakfast and lunch bags at Linford Elementary School, Laramie Middle School, or Laramie High School between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Monday.
