Winter has come...again. Although Laramie residents know to take extra caution while driving on slick roads, there are a few city ordinances that may be overlooked during the winter months. For a complete list of ordinances found in the City of Laramie Municipal Code, click here.

    Warming up your car before work

    It is technically illegal to warm up your car before going to school or work. According to ordinance 10.16.305, "No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key, and effectively setting the brake thereon." However, this ordinance is only enforced on a complaint basis.

    Clearing Your Driveway

    Per City Ordinance, "All persons shall keep the sidewalks in front of and adjacent to the grounds owned, occupied, or managed by them free of ice, mud, dirt, rubbish or filth. Such persons shall cause the snow to be removed from sidewalks no later than 24 hours after the snow event."

    Clearing your car windows

    According to city ordinance  10.16.520, "No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, or other non transparent material, sidewings, or rear windows of such vehicle other than a certificate or other paper authorized by superintendent or required to be so displayed by law."

    Additionally, the ordinance states that "The windshield on every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a device for cleaning rain, snow, or other moisture from the windshield..." and that "Every windshield wiper upon a motor vehicle shall be maintained in good working order."

    Deposit on Right of Way

    City Municipal Code 12.08.010 states that "no person shall cause or permit snow, ice, or other debris on a public right of way. Any such deposit shall be prima facie evidence that it was placed by the owner, occupant, or manager of the adjacent tenement or grounds."
