If you happen to have taken a shopping trip to downtown Laramie lately, you have probably noticed all of the creatively decorated window displays that line downtown. This is one of those times of year where downtown seems to really shine its brightest as everyone gets into the holiday spirit. For many years now, a window decorating competition has taken place in Downtown Laramie to encourage merchants to get their stores looking their best for the holiday season. This year, Trey Sherwood, of the Laramie Main Street Alliance directed the judging which took place at the end of this past week; local merchants did not dissappoint! The theme for this year's window contest and parade was a "Gem City Starlight Christmas." Here were the winners in each of the 6 judged categories and you can check out the pictures of each window in the gallery above.

Best Use of Theme went to Alexander’s Fine Jewelry. The judges liked the blue and white color scheme, clean design and reflective elements that visually captured the “Gem City Starlight” Christmas theme.

Most Original was awarded to Poppy’s Florist. The judges where thrilled with the creative use of marshmallows used to decorate the large storefront window and small display tree. They also said the use of lighting and mirrors added to the overall quality of the design.

Creative Use of Merchandise went to the Salvation Army. The judges appreciated the mix of Christmas and holiday décor, old and new, and creative use of donated items.

Best Design was awarded to Mountain Valley Bridal. The judges were “wowed” with the blue cape over the white bridal gown and the striking color combination used in material and lights.

Most Welcoming was given to Miss Etta’s as the judges felt the display beckoned patrons into the store to see more.

Best Overall was a tie between Mimi’s Consignments and Bella Home Boutique and Bakery. Judges liked the sophisticated use of merchandise and color, silver and gold, used by Mimi’s and the combination unexpected colors, black, pink and white, historic artifacts from the Home Bakery, and feminine merchandise used by downtown’s newest business, Bella Home.

While these were the chosen winners in each category, there were some amazing windows that did not quite make the cut that you should stop by and see. A Touch of Country's window was stunning and has some incredible detail. The Music Box also has a pretty creative Angry Birds display up with Christmas packages.

Judges included representatives from marketing agencies, non-profits, the Laramie Plains Museum and members of the Laramie Main Street Alliance Design Committee. The DLBA invites the community to come downtown Tuesday evenings in December when the majority of businesses will be open until 7 p.m. for late night shopping and check out all the decorated windows.

The winners of the downtown contest will also be entered in our own Holiday Lights Photo Contest. Don't forget to enter your picture for a chance to win some great prizes!
