UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING PRESS RELEASE:

Click here to listen to an interview with representatives from Abilities and WIND.

Disability support groups at the University of Wyoming will host a number of activities throughout March to reflect upon the diversity and experiences of disabilities.

“March is regarded as a time to celebrate disability and to promote the awareness and acceptance of people with disabilities in everyday life as active participants of society and to acknowledge the continual fight for equal rights and access to resources,” says Janet Perkins Corbett, Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) project coordinator assistant. WIND hosts the activities with University Disability Support Services (UDSS), and Abilities, a group for students with disabilities and their allies.

WIND will present “Disability Rights-Why They Matter,” Monday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Family Room. The presenters will be Kendall Corbett, WIND coordinator of consumer activities, and Perkins Corbett.

WIND is Wyoming’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, which works to assist individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, professionals, and UW students through education, trainings, community services and early intervention. WIND also offers the UW disability studies minor.

Throughout March, UDSS will continue to present its Extra Mile Award recognizing faculty and staff who go “above and beyond.” Recipients are selected from nominations submitted by students and UDSS staff. Qualities demonstrated by those honored include knowledge, sensitivity and helpfulness in assisting students with disabilities. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, March 14, and certificates shared with recipients during the week of March 24. For more information on the nomination process, email Brynn Elliott at belliot4@uwyo.edu.

Near the end of March, UW’s new student organization, Abilities, will host campus events that highlight the experiences of individuals with disabilities in Wyoming. Abilities will host a panel of students who have disabilities Tuesday, March 25, from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Family Room.

Activities conclude Friday, April 4, from 3-4:15 p.m., with a presentation by Ashlee Lundvall of Cody, Ms. Wheelchair USA. Her talk, “Crown and Camo: Making the ADA Work for You,” is during the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice.

For more information about disability events and organizations on campus and how to get involved, email WIND Information Specialist Sara DiRienzo at sdirienz@uwyo.edu; Associate Director of Student Educational Opportunity Chris Primus at CFPrimus@uwyo.edu; or Abilities President Megan Darrow at mdarrow@uwyo.edu.
