Your Question:

What is happening on the UW land east of Ivinson Hospital? Seems like a major project is taking shape. How will this impact public use of this land as an area to jog and walk dogs?

The City's Response:

The land east of Ivinson Hospital, past the City water tanks and southeast of the Willett Drive dead-end, is owned by Campus Crest LLC, not the University of Wyoming. Campus Crest is a nationwide private developer and manager of college student housing. They recently received approval to build a 224-unit apartment complex on part of the property (about 20 out of the site’s 37.4 acres). Final building permits are pending at this time; however, the owners have received City permits to grade the land and install preliminary site elements, including temporary trailers for construction and apartment pre-leasing purposes.

The property has always been privately owned, but the former owners apparently were not opposed to light recreational uses, such as running and dog-walking. Full run of the acreage won’t be available, as much of the 20-acre site will be taken up by the housing complex. However, the southern approx. 14.7 acres (around 40% of the total) will be left as public open space. This buffer area along the Spring Creek channel will soon be conveyed to the City. Campus Crest will build a public trail near the creek for eventual connection to the City’s Greenbelt network, linking to a second trail along the south side of Willett Street.
