The Question:

The city is sure quick to close all the outdoor pools and water attractions at around town, but never open them back up after the threat has passed. Why is that?

The Answer:

The City places a very high priority on safety, and when lightning or other weather conditions are present that create unsafe conditions, the City Aquatics staff will close the pools. In the Recreation Center, wind and cold may cause the outdoor pool to close and the patrons can move indoors until the condition passes. Lightning requires that everyone evacuate all City pools and we must wait for 45 minutes past the last lightning strike before the outdoor pool at the Recreation Center can be re-opened. The splashpad and wading pool are closed for staff and patron safety and the lifeguard is dismissed during lightning closures. Sending staff to re-open the splashpad and a will leave very little time before the end of day closure.
