Will More People Run for Laramie City Council? – Survey of the Day

This past fall, it was decided in a special election that the City of Laramie would switch from a seven to a three ward system for electing city council members. The special election was brought about by a petition from the League of Women Voters and one of the biggest reasons they gave for wanting to reduce the number of wards was to encourage more competition for the city council seats.

During the time that Laramie operated under a seven ward system, there was no contest in 13 ward primary elections. The public filing period opened last week, but so far only two candidates have filed for the Laramie City Council. Councilors Karl McCraken and Erik Molvar have filed for re-election to the city council. There is still time for candidates to put in their bid for a seat as the deadline for filing is on June 1.

There is one seat open in the new Ward 1, two seats are open in the new Ward 2 and one seat open in the new Ward 3.
