Your Question:
What can be done about the people that do not obey the leash law in Laramie? I walk my dog on a leash in the housing area from 9th to 15th south of Russell/Spring Creek and I get confronted by a loose dog every single time...
One of the things many people love about Laramie is that is still has a somewhat wild nature. With a rough history and tough weather, there's something about the Gem City that simply can't be tamed. The fact is that in a town populated by over 30,000 people, wildlife are close neighbors, and it's not always a harmonious relationship.
When the Laramie City Council began working on amending the ordinances governing animals, they realized very quickly that if there was going to be a leash law in the city, then dog friendly areas would need to be added. Based on recommendations from an AD HOC Committee, the Parks, Tree, and Recreation Advisory Board became responsible for advising the Council of where these areas and times allowed for dogs to be off leash should be. They have recommended four parks to have dog-friendly areas, and those recommendations are now open for public comment.
Putting your dog on a leash and licensing your cat will now be required as revisions to Laramie Municipal Code Title 6, dealing with "Animals", which were approved in a 7-to-1 vote on third and final reading Tuesday night at the regular meeting of the Laramie City Council. Councilor Joe Vitale voted against the changes to the ordinance, Councilor Klaus Hanson was absent.
