Over the past few months we have been covering the City Council meetings as they have been trying to figure out if they will issue the new liquor licenses allotted to the city by the 2010 Census. Due to Laramie's growth they may issue up to two new licenses. The council's meeting a few weeks ago was particularly interesting and frustrating for some people, especially those already established or new businesses who have been waiting to see whether or not they will receive one of the new licenses. The City Council delayed making any decision on the issue until at least February 7th.

While the issue of liquor licenses might seem like a fairly minor issue, there is actually more than meets the eye riding on this decision. Many of the businesses below may only chose to open in town if they are given the chance to serve alcohol. The existence of more businesses will of course result in job growth and economic growth in Laramie as well. On the other side of the issue, some city council members question whether it is a good idea to introduce the new licenses in rough economic times as they fear hurting other alcohol serving businesses.

After a few requests on our facebook page that we poll the public to see which businesses they favor issuing the new licences to, we decided to oblige with a set of polls. One asks how many licenses you think the city council should award and the other which businesses should receive the licenses. The polls will end at midnight on February 6th before the next city council meeting and you may vote in each one. In the end it is anyone's guess as to whether the permits will actually be issued, but here is a chance to give your feedback. The list of businesses and a brief explanation of their use plans follow along with the polls. For a full description on each individual business listed look here.
