Lawmakers May Ask Schools to Try Year-Round Class

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — State lawmakers are considering a bill that would encourage school districts to try out year-round class schedules to see if shorter vacations improve learning.

The Associated Press reports the House Appropriations Committee voted 5-2 Thursday to send the proposal to the full House.

The bill would provide up to $3 million for up to six schools to take part. Participating schools would get additional money equal to 5 percent of their total school-level funding.

A sponsor of the bill, Republican Rep. Steve Harshman of Casper, says schools in the program wouldn't have to increase the total number of school days, but vacation breaks couldn't be longer than three weeks.

Schools would have to apply by July 31. No district could have more than one school in the pilot program.
