A man charged with strangling a woman at her apartment in February pleaded not guilty to one felony charge Monday in Albany County District Court.

Alec M. Britt, 22, is charged with one count of strangulation of a household member. If convicted, he could serve up to five years in prison and pay a $10,000 fine.

Britt was arrested Feb. 8 after police went to 515 E. Ivinson Ave. to investigate a domestic disturbance report at 12:41 a.m.

According to the police affidavit, the victim told officers Britt attacked her after the two got into an argument and she asked Britt to leave her apartment several times. During a police interview, Britt allegedly said he argued with the victim in the hallway of her apartment building and followed her into her apartment.

Court documents say the victim told police Britt held her neck for about two seconds as she gasped for air, and EMS found injuries on the victim’s neck.

Britt remains free on $10,000 cash bond.

Judge Jeffrey Donnell scheduled trial for Aug. 15-16.
