Laramie Man Charged With Child Endangerment Given Split Sentence
A Laramie man charged with child endangerment received a split sentence in Albany County District Court Tuesday, May 30.
Shannon Stevenson, will serve one year in the Albany County Detention Center, with a period of three years supervised probation upon his release. Albany County District Court Judge Tori Kricken said the court will also consider furlough to allow Stevenson to complete an inpatient drug treatment program at Southwest Counseling Service in Rock Springs.
“Four to six months in a treatment program will far outweigh the good done with you sitting in a jail cell,” Kricken said.
Attorney David Korman said Stevenson had a bed date for June 5 at the center, however Judge Kricken declined to allow that date, saying it was too soon and Stevenson needed to serve out a sufficient portion of his sentence in the detention center before being allowed furlough, given his lengthy criminal history.
Stevenson was accused of using and storing methamphetamine and paraphernalia in a home where three young children lived.
According to court documents, Laramie police discovered methamphetamine in the home on Aug. 11 while serving a warrant on another person in an unrelated investigation. A five-year-old, a 15-yea- old and an 11-year-old child had all spent time in the home. None of the drugs, which included methamphetamine in multiple forms, were locked up or stored away from the children.
Korman asked the court to give Stevenson an extra night to get his affairs in order before reporting to the detention center, which Judge Kricken granted. Stevenson will report to the detention center at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 31.
