Meet the Ghosts of Laramie’s Past on the Greenhill Cemetery Tour

For those who want to learn a little about Laramie's past residents and town notables, Greenhill Cemetery's annual tour is this Friday, July 7.

The family-friendly tour starts with the memorial bench and monument to Laramie attorney David Nicholas, who died unexpectedly in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 2005 while serving with an international organization.

Other family names of ​gravesites among the dozen to be visited this year include Nicholas, Clippinger, Redburn, Lestrum, Shive, Quackenbush, Corthell, Knight (Sam), Williams (Dick), Sundby, Lovejoy (Nelle), Grier, Johnson (Omar) and Goumas.

A five-minute story will be told at each gravesite about the individual and their contribution to or influence on the community. Interpreters will be at each site. 

The tour begins at 5 p.m. The meeting place will be at the Nicholas bench at row Q, toward the end of the main road from the entrance on N. 15th St., just past the intersection with Willet Drive.  

Bug repellent, water, and a sunhat are recommended. The tour is suitable for all ages and features a variety of speakers at each of the 12 gravesites. It will last about an hour and a half.

Tour sponsors are the Albany County Historical Society and the Laramie Plains Museum.

Additionally, the Parks and Recreation Department has developed a walking tour brochure for people to use on a self-guided visit and learn about Laramie's former citizens from all walks of life. The tour includes Civil War veterans, world-renowned educators, and ladies who served as members of the first mixed juries in the world.
