Visit The Most Remote State Run Outhouse In Wyoming
What you see here might just be the most remote outhouse run by the state of Wyoming.
It's just a hole in the ground.
It's made of wood, like back in the good ol' days.
You might wonder why the State of Wyoming would bother.
But when you see it is in one of the most beautiful and historic places in the state, that hardly anybody ever visits it makes sense.
This is where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid along with the Hole In The Wall Gang hid stolen cattle and horses, plus the money they stole, and hid out from the law.
Today, it's beautiful ranch land mostly operated by The Hole In The Wall Ranch.
This is one of the most beautiful stretches of land in all of Wyoming.
A lone wooden outhouse placed in the middle of it makes the scene perfect.
You can book a stay at The Hole In The Wall Ranch.
Much of the area is also BLM land and open to camping and fishing.
But let's get back to that outhouse.
If you drove way the hell out there to do some camping and fishing, and nature calls in a different way, you can either squat down behind a dip in the landscape or, drive to the only walled-in hole in a 45-minute drive.
It would be nice if the state of Wyoming left some damn toilet paper. You did not think to bring your own, did you?
Yes, I went in to use it.
Yes, I looked down the hole.
Yes, it is half full.
Yes, it stinks in there.
But it is a real old west outhouse. That's for sure.
Just one question: how often do you think that Wyoming Game And Fish comes out here to take care of this place?
Maybe once a year?
That's probably correct.
You might think it's silly that the state even has an outhouse out there until you need it, and then you'll thank them for it.
The picture below is of me, walking out of the little place after a successful expulsion of bodily waste.
I can assure you that the hole works.
It's also really gross in there so it's probably better to take your chances down behind some low area in the landscape and hope that the rattlesnakes are sleeping.
It's worth driving out to see one of the most beautiful places in Wyoming.
Maybe even camping at the Outlaw Cave Campground where Butch, Sundance, and the gang hung out.
Don't forget to bring your own toilet paper.
I was a little surprised that this outhouse was not full of holes.
People love to practice target out here.
Then again, there are some races nearby, and gunshots might raise alarms.
"LOAD UP BOYS SOMEBODIES SHOOTING UP THE CRAPPER AGAIN"
Just - please - don't shoot up the only crapper on the prairie.
In the video below, you will see one of the most horrific tragedies Wyoming winds have wrought.
Imagine being alone on the prairie - no, not the prairie, but more like a desert region of this vast and beautiful state.
Nature calls you. By that, I do not mean the sound of nature, that haunting voice in your mind that beckoned you out to explore this magnificent, desolate creation by God's hand. I mean - the other "nature calls." The one that cannot be ignored.
But where, way out here, can a person modestly squat to answer that call? The land is flat and open as far as the eye can see. True, there is nobody for well over a hundred miles at least. But you know the cruel temperament and evil humor of Lady Luck. The moment you assume the most vulnerable posture, one that you cannot relax or retreat from, someone will arrive to see you.
Perhaps that is why there is an outhouse way out here. Someone saw the need, and built one. According to the sign nearby, this land is a state park. Was our government watching out for our best interest even way out here?
It was just a simple wooden structure. But because it was government-built, it must have cost over a million dollars, at least.
But the winds - Wyoming winds. Like the haunting song about her, the Wyoming wind blows, unchanged, and it has tipped over the old wooden outhouse.
Yes, the only place a civilized person would feel safe in over a hundred miles to drop trousers and -- it lies on its side, in the vast open sage of Wyoming.
