Cheyenne police are warning residents not to fall for an old scam that's making the rounds again.

According to a department Facebook post, someone claiming to be a deputy with the Laramie County Sheriff's Office is calling people telling them they have missed jury duty and need to provide payment on a gift card to avoid being jailed.

"The number the scammer calls from even connects to a fake Laramie County Sheriff's Office phone tree," the post reads.

Police say a common red flag with most phone scams is the request for gift cards.

"You cannot pay your way out of jury duty," they said. "Although some may wish they could."

Police say if you ever have any doubt about the identity of an officer, you can call dispatch at (307) 637-6524 to verify they are who they claim to be.
