LARAMIE -- The ACLU of Wyoming is hosting Liberty & Libations, a community building event in Laramie, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 29, at Solidarity House Cooperative, 2250 Welsh Lane in Laramie.

Liberty & Libations is an opportunity to socialize and network with ACLU supporters, meet the staff of the ACLU and learn how the ACLU’s mission is changing communities across Wyoming.

The conditions at the Wyoming Women’s Center in Lusk will also be discussed. In a legal complaint filed in November 2018 with the U.S. District Court of Wyoming in Cheyenne, three inmates at the Women’s Center allege that overcrowding and staff turnover at the prison fuel tensions between inmates and have led to a rise in violence.

The inmates are asking the federal court to force the state to deal with the overcrowding and the deteriorating facilities they say have created unconstitutional conditions of confinement.

Liberty & Libations is free and open to the public. Each attendee will receive a complimentary beverage (must be 21 or older for alcoholic beverages, of course), and light snacks will also be provided.

The American Civil Liberties of Wyoming is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of civil liberties and civil rights. The ACLU believes freedoms of press, speech, assembly, and religion, as well as the rights to due process, equal protection, and privacy, are fundamental to a free people.

In addition, the ACLU seeks to advance constitutional protections for groups traditionally denied their rights, including people of color, women, and the LGBT communities. The ACLU of Wyoming carries out its work through selective litigation, lobbying at the state and local level, and through public education and awareness of what the Bill of Rights means for people of Wyoming.
