8-year-old Pike Carlson and his family are speaking out after being brutally attacked by a mountain lion outside his home in Bailey, Colorado.

On August 21, Pike was playing with his brother in their backyard. He ran over to meet his friend at a house next to theirs when a mountain lion jumped out and latched onto his head. Pike's older brother ran into the house and told their dad what was going on.

Meanwhile, Pike grabbed a stick and began to try and poke the mountain lion in the eyes.

The stick broke and Pike's father watched as the animal drag Pike under a tree. Right before he reached Pike and the animal, it let go of his son and took off.

Ron Carlson said this to 9 News Denver:

When I first picked him up, I could see the whole side of his face was open. There was blood all over him. His scalp was ripped up in several spots. It was something that no parent should ever see.

After multiple surgeries, the family returned home from the hospital to signs welcoming them back made by neighbors.
