President’s LGBTQ Reception,” Wednesday, Sept. 5, 5:30 p.m., Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center Mendicino reception area on the third floor. UW President Laurie Nichols will host a LGBTQ+ reception for UW faculty, staff and students.

The events, organized by the Matthew Shepard Memorial Group, are to commemorate the death of Shepard, an openly gay UW student from Casper who was murdered in 1998.

“The Matthew Shepard memorial events are significant because they reaffirm that violence and murder committed against anyone in this community is not tolerated,” says UW Chief Diversity Officer Emily Monago, the memorial group co-chair. “The events are significant because it is a time to celebrate marginalized identities, like Matt’s identity as a gay man, the LGBTQ+ community, disability, racial/ethnic, religious, immigration status, veteran status and other marginalized identities living in Wyoming and throughout the world.”

She adds that the programs and events reaffirm UW’s values and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and are designed to engage students, faculty, staff and community members.

Most events are open to the public and free, including a performance by Grammy-winning Conspirare, a choir inspired by the power of music to change lives.
