Modern Homesteading will be the theme of the Eighth Local Food Gathering, Saturday, April 29. There will be 12 workshop sessions that can help find ways to increase production and consumption of locally produced foods.
Doors open at 8:30am and the sessions last from 9am to 2:30pm at the new Laramie High School (1710 Boulder Drive) in Laramie.
This year’s Local Food Gathering will begin with insights on modern homesteading. Sessions will begin at 9am, 11am and 1pm with breaks between to connect with other attendees. Informational booths will be available.
Session topics include:
• Gardening Basics for Cold Climates of Wyoming
• Raising Small Animals for Meat and Fiber
• Selecting and Caring for Ornamental Trees
• Activities for Youth by Girl Scout Troop 1207
• Laramie’s Past, Present, and Future Climate: A Careful Look into the Modeled Crystal Ball
• New and Unusual Grains: Selecting and Using Rare and Gluten-Free Grains
• Hot New Methods of Composting and Mulching
• Water: Quality for Gardens and Homes; Capturing and Alternatives; and Fees for Utilities, Community Gardens
• Edible Insects (for kids and adults)
• Yee-Haw! What Local Ranches Offer for Tourism and Entertainment
• Soil and Soil Amendments: Improving the Soils of Laramie
Lunch will be a choice of hearty soups and sandwiches and Girl Scout cookies.
The 8th Laramie Local Food Gathering is organized by Laramie Local Foods, a nonprofit seeking to increase the production and consumption of foods from the area. Partial financial funding for the Gathering is provided by Barnyards and Backyards and Western States Bank, and the event is supported by the UW ACRES student farm.
