The Question:

I've noticed that homes in Laramie seem to be pricier than comparable homes in Cheyenne, Casper and many other cities throughout Wyoming. I've also observed that there's a lot of homes that are in dire need of updating and that it's difficult to find a decent home in the $200,000-$250,000 price range unless you're willing to purchase a twin home. Does Laramie offer any sort of "spruce up" program to homebuyers who purchase an older home? Also, are there any plans to build any newer homes for under $300,000?

The Answer:

“The City of Laramie is currently working with a consulting firm to finish the City’s first genuinely comprehensive housing study. The questioner asks two key questions that we hope the study will answer: (a) Why do housing prices appear to be higher than comparable properties in other Wyoming cities; and (b) What price points, or “niches”, in the housing market locally are not being met by existing housing stock? The City expects study results in late summer or early autumn. It is hoped the study will allow decision-makers to adjust City regulations for a better overall balance between housing affordability and quality.”
