One of the top swimmers over the last few years, but a little overshadowed, Laramie senior Katie McPherson is trying to lead her team to another title.

Katie is the younger sister of former three-time 4A Athlete of the Meet and Athlete of the Year, Oliva McPherson. Still, Katie’s carved out a nice career for herself and is even an individual state champion. She’ll get a chance to defend her title in the 100 freestyle later this week. Katie was also runner-up to her sister in the 50 freestyle last year and part of two state champion relay teams.

In 2020, McPherson is currently ranked first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.42 and in the 100 backstroke at 59.56. She is also second in the 100 freestyle (54.64) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:01.31). McPherson is also in the top 10 of individual medley and breaststroke.

WyoPreps spoke with Katie about her season, her top events, where she thinks she might swim in the state meet, and trying to help LHS accomplish a four-peat in the video at the top of this story.

Laramie head coach Tom Hudson provided an update on Laramie earlier this season, plus spoke about McPherson’s senior campaign, as well as another top swimmer for the Lady Plainsmen, Anna Roesler.

Laramie will host the Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday and Friday at the LHS Aquatics Center.
