Wyoming High School Football Crowns Five Champions

The Vikings, Broncs, Buffaloes, Panthers and Mustangs won the five titles at the 2014 Wyoming State High School Football Championships in Laramie.

Over two days of action at War Memorial Stadium, the champions were decided on the field. While Friday was cloudy and cool, Saturday's action was played on a bit of a frozen tundra.

Class 1A-6man: Guernsey-Sunrise 80, Dubois 30

Senior Brady Esquibel ran for six touchdowns and threw for another, as the Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings won their second 6-man championship Friday with an 80-30 victory over the Dubois Rams.

The Vikings scored the first 20 points of the game. The Rams pulled within 41-30 late in the first half, but Guernsey answered right away. Austin Quynn scored on a 30-yard run for a 48-30 at half. The Vikings scored the final 39 points of the game.

Esquibel ran for 242 yards, while Quynn added 136. The Vikings out-gained Dubois, 463-to-312 in total yards and averaged 10.1 yards per play. They also took advantage of four Rams turnovers.

Rowan Hawk had 71 rush yards and a pair of t-d's for Dubois.

This is the Vikings fourth title in school history. All of them have been since 2004.

Class 3A: Cody 19, Douglas 0

The Cody Broncs won their first state football title since 1991 with a 19-0 victory over the Douglas Bearcats Friday.

Carter Myers ran for 239 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries to power the Broncs past the Bearcats. He also added eight tackles, including a sack and pass break-up on defense.

Cody held Douglas to 137 total yards of offense, while the Broncs piled up 319. They also ran 19 more plays and were nearly plus-8 in time of possession.

Cameron Myers and Noah Rivera added touchdown runs for Cody, who also won their fourth in school history.

Class 2A: Mountain View 28, Big Horn 19

Austin Housekeeper and Cade Covington combined for 307 yards rushing, as the Mountain View Buffaloes defeated the Big Horn Rams, 28-19, Saturday in Laramie.

Mountain View exacted a little revenge after losing last year's title to the Rams.

Housekeeper ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries. Covington added 130 yards on 26 carries and also scored twice. Housekeeper's 27-yard t-d run in the third quarter put Mountain View ahead to stay.

Big Horn jumped out to a 12-0 lead and led 19-14 at half before the Buffaloes rallied.

Mountain View out-gained the Rams 373-to-160 in total offense.

It's the first state football championship for Mountain View since 1997 and just the fourth in school history.

Class 1A: Cokeville 26, Lusk 6

The Cokeville Panthers won their 22nd football title in school history with a 26-6 win over the Lusk Tigers. It's the third title for the Panthers in the last four years.

Cokeville took advantage of four Tiger turnovers. James Teichert ran for 178 yards and a pair of scores. Jace Petersen added 91 yards rushing and the other two t-d's.

It was 13-6 Cokeville, when Lusk put together a drive that reached the Panthers 16-yard line. Cokeville's Jake Jackman intercepted a Zach Venable pass. On the next play, Teichert raced 85 yards for a score and changed the momentum.

This is the 20th state title for head coach Todd Dayton in his 36th year.

Lusk finished as the Class 1A runner-up for a fourth consecutive season.

Class 4A: Natrona Country 30, Gillette 7

The Natrona County Mustangs took advantage of five interceptions and rolled to a 30-7 victory over the Gillette Camels to win the 4A title.

Josh Harshman and Casson Burgen had two interceptions apiece. Harshman also ran for 73 yards and threw a t-d pass. Stevann Brown added 68 yards on the ground and a pair of scores.

N-C finished with 364 total yards on offense, while the vaunted Mustangs defense allowed only 159 yards. Fifty-five of those came on the a late touchdown drive by the Camels.

This is the 17th state football championship for Natrona. It's the sixth for head coach Steve Harshman.
