A big debate is on. With the 2012 Summer games in London in full swing, swimmer extraordinaire Michael Phelps continues to re-write the records books seemingly each time he's in the pool. That has stirred up the discussion about past greats from the US at the Games.

Phelps just added his 20 overall medal and 16th gold with another win Thursday. While he dominates today's headlines, it's brought about thoughts of what others did to grab the spotlight. Some have highlighted Carl Lewis' career in track and field or what Jesse Owens did for more than just sport back in 1936 in Germany.

There have been many greats that have competed throughout all the Games.
