City of Laramie maintenance crews are working to repair a water main break on the corner of Grand Avenue and 26th Street.

Public Works Operations Superintendent Paul Beckett said they were alerted to the break at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9.

Beckett says the city has had to deal with a number of water leaks due to the recent cold snap.

“So what happens is, when you get a cold snap like we did last week it drives the layer of frost underground down deeper and puts pressure on the lines,” Beckett said. "The older pipes will break. Water breaks are common when we have temperature fluctuations.”

Beckett said there are three water lines in the area of the current break and breaking through the frost layer will be tough, making repairs slow going.

He said crews will continue to work on the break and will hopefully have it fixed by noon today.
