From April 17th-21st, the University of Wyoming Theatre will be performing Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera The Mikado. Gilbert and Sullivan have also written the well-known plays, The Pirates of Penzance and the H.M.S. Pinafore. Set in Japan, The Mikado is a comic love story about two disadvantaged lovers trying to make their love work in the face of suitors and Japanese laws.  The story begins with charges of flirting—a criminal offense—in the town of Titipu.  The story revolves around the Mikado’s (emperor) son, Nanki-Poo, who is wandering the kingdom disguised.  He has fallen in love with Yum-Yum, who, alas, is engaged to another.  However, Nanki-Poo is also engaged.  The play unfolds around their love dilemmas.

Some of the memorable songs in the play include “The Flowers That Bloom in the Spring,” “On a Tree by a River (Tit Willow),” “Three Little Maids,” and “A Wandering Minstrel, I.” The songs were one of the reasons that they play was chosen because they provide an opportunity for “young, developing singers the opportunity to really shine, and is particularly appropriate for young artists,” says Director Dr. Larry L. Hensel.

If the music or the story line is not enticing, consider going to see the scenery, which will be spectacular.  Between the colorful costumes and scenic background, the play will be visually stimulating.

This production will feature UW’s Eminet Artist in Residence, Marcia Ragonetti. She will be playing Nanki-Poo's betrothed, Katisha.  She has been associated with the Colorado Opera since 1983 and being the leading lady at many other opera organizations in Colorado.  She has also performed internationally, and is a skilled vocal coach and mentor.

Tickets are $14 for the general public, $11 for senior citizens, and $7 for students.  All shows are at 7:30 pm.  For tickets and information call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
