UW Law Week Features Oral Arguments, Expert Speakers

Oil prices, Indian tribe sovereignty and NCAA compliance issues are among topics to be discussed by legal experts during Law Week 2012, which takes place Oct. 22-26 at the University of Wyoming. All activities are open to the public.

Highlights of the week include oral arguments heard by both the 10th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals and the Wyoming Supreme Court. Many of the events have been certified by the Wyoming State Bar Association for Continuing Legal Education credits.

Law Week provides unequalled access to intelligent discourse on contemporary legal issues, says Katie Armstrong, a second-year law student and first vice president of the Potter Law Club that sponsors Law Week.

“Very few law schools can host an event that allows students to hear opinions from the chief lawmaking body of the state on campus, and have the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with such distinguished and important members of the legal community,” Armstrong says. “The College of Law consistently attracts speakers who are on the cutting edge of their fields.”

Monday, Oct. 22:

-- 11 a.m. -- Steven Pevar, senior staff counsel for the ACLU, “The Right of Indian Tribes to be Self-Governing,” College of Law Room 170.

-- Noon -- Native American Rights Fund Staff Attorney Don Wharton, “The Native American Rights Fund: Natural Resource and Environmental Issues facing First Nations,” College of Law Room 170.

-- 6:15-8 p.m. -- Judge David Ebel of the 10th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals, “Justice Byron R. White: The Legend and the Man,” College of Law Room 178.

Tuesday, Oct. 23:

-- 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. – The 10th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals will listen to oral arguments followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience, College of Law Room 178.

-- 6:15-8:30 p.m. – A panel of Ryan Lance, Shannon Anderson and Paul Ulrich discuss “Frac(k) to the Future: A Balanced Discussion of the Future of Hydraulic Fracturing in Wyoming,” College of Law Rare Books Room and Room 178.
