With the start of a new semester comes a slew of entertainment and events held at the University of Wyoming. For all the poetry writers, listeners and lovers alike, get ready for a night of pure poetic competition. The Student Activities Council will host a poetry slam for UW students at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the University of Wyoming Union Gardens.

As one of their first events of the spring 2012 semester, the Student Activities Council is encouraging any and all poetry lovers to either compete or simply attend the poetry slam.  Not only will it provide for a great night of poetic entertainment, but those competing will have the opportunity to win an all-expenses paid trip to represent UW in the Regional Rec Games Poetry Slam competition in Colorado Springs.

When we hosted this event last year, we were originally nervous about how many people would participate and the quality of the competition, Stephanie Long, Student Activities Council graduate assistant, said.  We were blown away by the talent and we knew we wanted to host this event once again this year.

Those wishing to compete can sign up starting Jan. 11 at either the Student Activities Council event table on Wednesdays in the Union Breezeway, or in the Campus Activities Center in the basement of the Union.  There is a 25 contestant limit so competition spots will be given on a first come first serve basis.  Contestants will be expected to stick to a three minute limit to present their poetry.  A panel of judges will then choose two contestants to go on to the regional competition in February.
