A unique type of 5K race is coming to Laramie in which runners must survive a “zombie apocalypse”. The Zombie 5K, Sponsored by Friends of Community Recreation, takes place on Sunday, October 19th at Undine Park in Laramie. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race beginning at 9 a.m.

The race centers around two different types of race participants: zombies and runners. People will get to choose which type of participant they want to be during the registration process. Runners will receive flags like the ones used for flag football. Zombies will then try to “infect” runners by stealing their flags.

Runners who cross the finish line with at least one flag, then they have officially survived the zombie apocalypse. The zombie that infects the most runners will win the title of best zombie.

Prizes will be awarded for the best time, best zombie, and fastest team. Teams will have their times averaged and must have at least 4 people in them.

All participants are encouraged to dress as zombies. People can show up with their make-up already done or can have it done at the race registration.

“We really want to emphasize that it’s a family friendly event, even though it may not necessarily be associated as something that would be fun for all ages,” says Amber Harned with Friends of Community Recreation. “We’ve tried to incorporate things for everyone.”

One of those family oriented parts of the race is that children have the option to run a shorter, one mile course. The children’s course is primarily around the park, so it keeps children safe.

The cost for the race is $30 for adults with a shirt, $20 for adults without a shirt, $10 for children with a shirt, $5 for children without a shirt and $60 for teams. Participants will be able to choose if they want a t-shirt for the event. Click here to register online.

Funds will be used by Friends of Community Recreation so they can implement a needs based scholarship program so people can participate in recreational activities that they may not have been able to do due to income.

In addition, volunteers are needed for the event. Volunteers will be helping with set-up, clean-up, registration, directing race traffic and even helping with creating zombie make-up for zombies who were unable to do their own make-up. Those wanting to volunteer can contact the Friends of Community Recreation at friendsofcommunityrecreation@gmail.com, on Facebook or at 307-760-0832.
