On Monday, Wyoming's sole U.S. Representative called on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to immediately expel any members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's security detail who took part in a 2017 attack against peaceful protesters.

"During his last visit to Washington, D.C. in 2017, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's so-called 'security detail' brutally attacked peaceful demonstrators outside the Turkish ambassador's residence," Rep. Liz Cheney wrote in a letter to Sec. Pompeo Monday. "At least 11 people were injured throughout the day, including law enforcement personnel who every day defend Americans' constitutional rights and physical safety."

In May 2017, the Associated Press reported several members of Erdoğan's security team attacked a small group of protesters with their fists and feet when Erdoğan was visiting the U.S. The report describes men and dark suits repeatedly kicking a woman as she lay on the sidewalk.

Nineteen people, including 15 Turkish security officials, were indicted for the attacks.

Cheney called the behavior routine for the Turkish president and requested that none of the people involved in the 2017 attack be allowed into the U.S. If they reach U.S. soil, Cheney asked that they are "immediately expelled" from the United States.

Erdoğan will be in the U.S. this week to meet with President Donald Trump.

The AP reports Trump plans to confront Erdoğan about purchasing Russian defense systems.
