Links Action Begins For Laramie High School [VIDEO]
It’s tee time. That’s right, the start of the high school golf season is here.
The Laramie Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen open the season Thursday and Friday at the Cheyenne Invitational. Action on the links begins at 9 a.m.
Both squads return veteran line-ups and are coming of a terrific 2014-15 season. Both finished runner-up at the state championships in Laramie last September. This past spring, the plainsmen won the conference title, while the ladies were third.
Laramie high school head golf coach Kurk Aegerter would love to continue that momentum.
“The kids know what they have to do. They’ve seen what it takes to be successful… They’re all veterans. They’ve all played every place; so, it should be a good season for the boys and girls.”
This year’s team is led by four returners who received some honors in the last year.
Senior Jacquie Perdue was All-State and All-Conference in the past year. Junior Amanda Warren was All-Conference in the spring. Seniors Eli Bryant and Ryan Bellflower were All-State and All-Conference last season.
Perdue said, “We definitely have an amazing (girl’s) team. We’re going to come out strong and hopefully come out on top.”
Her individual goal is to finish in the top three at state this year.
Bryant knows the Plainsmen lost a terrific golfer and leader in John Murdock IV to graduation.
He says in order to keep the team at a high level, “Everybody needs to stay consistent and shoot low for us… We’re really looking to fill the gaps.”
Aegerter knows that the game of golf always comes down to a player’s mental approach and it’s something they work on all the time.
“It’s one shot at a time... We have a great format for them to follow in their thought process, and we work on that on the course. Really in golf, you just can’t get ahead of yourself.”
After Cheyenne, Laramie will head to Rock Springs, Evanston, Green River and Casper for regular season tournaments.
The 4A State Championships will be contested at the Power Horn Golf Club outside of Sheridan on September 24 and 25.
