One of the best swim coaches in the history of Wyoming is now a member of a national Hall of Fame.

Laramie High School head coach Tom Hudson was recently inducted into the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches’ Association of America (NISCA). It’s an organization that was founded in 1934.

To celebrate this great honor, Laramie High School is holding an Open House Celebration on Saturday, April 9 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Commons Area at LHS. Laramie assistant coach Tamara Bretting, who was the presenter for Coach Hudson, will be giving her presentation speech at 4 p.m.

Hudson’s resume is worthy of the National Hall of Fame. He’s coached 63 seasons (32 boys and 31 girls) at Laramie High School. Hudson has a dual record of 843 wins, 124 losses, and five ties. He’s coached 21 state championships, 31 conference titles, and 30 NISCA All-Americans. His teams have also finished runner-up at the state meet 17 times.

WyoPreps’ David Settle sat down with Coach Hudson in the video above to discuss this latest honor that happened on March 26, 2022, in Atlanta, GA. Hudson’s known about this honor for a while. He explained how the award came to fruition; described the ceremony in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago; how happy he was to have a lot of family in attendance; how well his presenter, assistant Tamara Bretting, did; and much more.

Hudson was presented the NISCA Outstanding Service Award in 2008. He was named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) National Swimming Coach of the Year in 2016 and has been a finalist three times. Hudson was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Association (WCA) Hall of Fame also in 2016. He earned the David H. Robertson Excellence in Coaching Award in 2008. Hudson has been named the Class 4A State Coach of the Year 26 times and a Conference Coach of the Year 33 times.

In addition, he’s been the NISCA David H. Robertson Award chairman and a member of the NISCA Awards committee since 2010. Hudson has served for four years as the Wyoming Swimming Coaches Association President, six years as the USA Swimming Wyoming Coaches representative, two years as Administrative Senior Vice-Chair, and ten years as a Senior Vice-Chair. He’s been a speaker at the NHSACA national conference three times.

In Laramie, he’s also served as the head swim coach at Laramie Middle School for 22 seasons, has been a Senior coach with Laramie Swim Club (LSC) since 1986, served as the LSC Board President for four years, and has served as the Wyoming Swimming Zones Team head coach ten times.

Hudson is currently the aquatics director at the Laramie High School Pool. He helped design the facility that opened in 2016. He’s been the department chair for physical education at LHS since 1995 and has been a curriculum developer within Albany County School District No. 1. Hudson also assisted with the Laramie Recreation Center design and build in 2005 as a member of the Advisory Committee.

Tom Hudson, this honor is well-deserved!
