Laramie High School Sports Roundup 2-11-21 [UPDATED]
Three more teams from Laramie High School will conclude their regular season schedule for winter sports this weekend.
UPDATE - 12:15 P.M. - The Cody Invite for the Nordic skiing team has been postponed due to the cold weather conditions. They will compete next weekend, Feb. 19 and 20.
Indoor track and wrestling join boys’ swimming and diving in that their regular-season is coming to a close.
As for last weekend, four teams competed at various events.
Laramie Swimming
The Plainsmen lost their conference championship swim meet at home by two points to Kelly Walsh.
Laramie scored 435 points, but the Trojans edged them out with 437. Natrona was a distant third.
LHS won four events at the conference meet. Mace Spiker-Miller captured the 200 individual medley race and the 100 butterfly race. Dylan Bressler won diving, and Collin Fontana added a win in the 500 freestyle race.
The Plainsmen host a ‘Last Chance’ qualifying meet on Friday at 4 p.m. with Cheyenne South and Rawlins.
Laramie Indoor Track
Both teams took second place at their second state qualifying meet last Friday in Gillette behind Cheyenne Central’s girls and boys.
The Laramie girls scored 162.50 teams points (Central - 196.50) and won five events. Libby Berryhill was the top performer with victories in the 400 meters and 3200 meters. Kodi Johnson won the 200 meters. Taylor Gardner finished first-place in the 55-meter hurdles, and LHS added a win in the 4x800 meter relay.
The Plainsmen took second with 157 points (Central - 178). They won only three events. Aidan Morris was a double-event winner. He placed first in the 55-meter hurdles and the pole vault. LHS also picked up a win in the 4x200 meter relay.
Their final chance to have an individual student-athlete or relay qualify for the state championships is on Saturday at the Kelly Walsh Indoor Invitational. Field events start at 9:30 a.m., and running events will begin at 10 a.m.
Laramie will compete against Cheyenne South, Douglas, Goshen County (Torrington), Kelly Walsh, Mountain View, and Rawlins
Laramie Nordic Skiing
At the Lander Invite last weekend, the boys’ team took third, while the girls’ was fourth.
In Friday’s classic race, Emmet Gray had the top finish of ninth place for the Plainsmen, while Eliza Fay came in 26th for the Laramie girls.
Saturday saw improved results in the freestyle race, as Tristan Smith finished fourth and Fay took 14th.
The Cody Invitational for Nordic skiing has been postponed. They won't compete until next weekend.
Laramie has their final regular-season action at the Cody Invitational. They will compete at Pahaska Teepee west of Cody.
Friday will be a 10 km skate or freestyle race at 1 p.m. Saturday is a 5 km classic at 10 a.m.
The state Nordic skiing championships are on Casper Mountain on Feb. 26 and 27.
Laramie Wrestling
Thanks to closed roads, Thursday’s match at H.E.M./Saratoga in Hanna was canceled.
Last Saturday, the Plainsmen lost two duals in Cheyenne at South High School to Sheridan and Worland.
The Broncs are rated No. 1 in Class 4A by wyowrestling.com. Sheridan beat LHS, 76-3. The lone victory for Laramie was by freshman Dakota Ledford at 126 pounds. He won with a 9-3 decision.
The Plainsmen lost to 3A No. 2 Worland, 48-18. LHS had four wins, all by decision, from Ben Ruckman (160), Gavin Kopp (182), Dakota Ledford (126), and Fischer Hawkins (138), plus a forfeit at 120.
Laramie is 14-13 in duals this season.
The Plainsmen finish their regular season at Cheyenne South on Thursday with JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m. LHS will wrestle at Burns/Pine Bluffs at 9 a.m. on Friday. That match was moved up from its original date of Saturday, Feb. 13.
Laramie Alpine Skiing
The alpine ski meet on Casper Mountain was postponed earlier this week, according to Laramie head coach Jasen Mitchell.
It has been moved to Feb. 25 and 26.
Laramie heads to the Pinedale Invitational next weekend at White Pine Ski Area.
