Laramie High School Golf Tees Off the Fall Sports Season
The 2016 high school golf season is here. The Laramie High School Golf teams will be full of youth in 2016.
Head coach Kurk Aegerter begins his 26th season at the helm. Laramie returns only two regulars from their main five on the boys’ squad, while the ladies have only one player with experience back. There’s only six letter winners returning from last fall, when the Lady Plainsmen finished third and the Plainsmen were sixth at the state golf championships.
Aegerter says with a young team we’re going to just throw them out on the course and let them play.
“Feel the competition; see what they can shoot, and then that gives us an idea of what we’re going to be working with.”
He added then they can focus on swing mechanics, mental management of the game and more.
Senior Amanda Warren will lead the Lady Plainsmen contingent. Warren said her role is one of mentor for a young team.
“I just need to keep the girls’ mental game strong, because when I was a freshman that was like the hardest thing; trying to stay confident.”
She’s been playing in the number two position the last couple of years and now moves to the top position. Warren just missed the top ten for All-State and All-Conference during the 2015-16 season.
Her goal is to keep playing good golf. “I’ve been playing well all summer, hopefully I can keep that up.” She added she’d like to make all-state and all-conference next spring.
The Plainsmen will be led by juniors Colby Clay and Henry Yost. Laramie lost their top three golfers from last season.
Aegerter said they feel they have a solid three and the four-five is going to be very competitive.
“Every week is probably going to be a different team that we’re sending. Can we find a team that will peak at state? That would be nice. It’s really an unknown.”
Laramie opens the season at the Airport Golf Course for the Cheyenne Invitational Thursday and Friday.
The six week season has them headed to Casper, Douglas and either Rawlins or Sheridan. Laramie will host a tournament Sept. 8th and 9th at Jacoby Golf Course. The 4A State Championships will be at the Rolling Green Country Club in Green River Sept. 23rd and 24th.
