Join The Laramie Fire Department In Honoring 9/11 Heroes

The Laramie Fire Department will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Wednesday morning, according to a news release from Assistant Laramie City Manager Todd Feezer.

According to the release, the City of Laramie Fire Department will get underway at about 9 a.m., just minutes after the first plane hit the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

Following a flag ceremony, Laramie Fire Chief Dan Johnson will give a commemerative speech.

The release quotes Laramie Firefighter Tomy Jansen as saying ''Those firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice that day and that’s a huge deal.Our 9/11 remembrance at the Laramie Fire Department allows us to honor the brotherhood and culture of the firefighting community.”

The event is open to the general public as well as active and retired firefighters and their families.

Memorial Stair Climb Planned

Firefighters will also hold a 9/11 memorial stair climb at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Wyoming Arena Auditorium. Registration for that event will get underway at 5:30 p.m.

“When the towers were hit, elevator access was limited and those who went up to go rescue people on the top floor had to pack all their gear up the 110 stories. So, the stair climb honors those guys by having participants climb 110 floors in the Arena-Auditorium or – in the past - at War Memorial Stadium. It is hard, but it’s a remembrance of their actions on that day helping people,” says Jansen.

Comemerative flags will also fly at every Laramie Fire Station on Wednesday..

Similar ceremonies remembering the heroes of 9/11 are planned across the country.
