Wyoming Highway 130 Over Snowy Range Closes For Winter Season
The Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced the closure of Wyoming Highway 130 over the high country of the Snowy Range Mountains has officially closed for the season.
The closure will remain in effect until sometime in the spring of 2026, dependent on weather conditions.
Such closures are an annual event on the highway, as winter weather, heavy accumulations of snow and a lack of usage make plowing the highway more trouble than it is worth. That stretch of highway is known as the Snowy Range Scenic Byway, and it reaches over 10,800 feet in elevation.
According to the WYDOT news release, crews in Laramie and Saratoga decided it was time to close for the upcoming winter travel season. The closed section runs from mile markers 36-48, from the Green Rock trailhead in the east to just above Ryan Park in the west.
This Is A Typical Closure Date For The Highway
According to the news release, the highway typically closes in November:
"Last year, WYO 130 closed for the season on Nov. 19. In previous years, WYO 130 closed Nov. 26th in 2023, Nov. 10 in 2022, Nov. 11 in 2021, and Nov. 14 in 2020. WYO 130 is one of two high-elevation highways in District 1 that close for the winter annually."
The closure will remain in effect until WYDOT crews can clear the highway of snow sometime next spring, according to the WYDOT news release.
