3rd Street is open! For now, anyway. As construction has dominated most of 3rd Street this spring and summer, drivers have had to re-route through 4th Street to reach parts of downtown and Gateway Plaza.

In honor of Jubilee Days, the City of Laramie has temporarily re-opened the street to ease the influx of traffic Laramie will be seeing this week, as Jubilee Days celebrations are underway.

3rd Street Will Close Again This Month.

On July 11, 3rd Street will close again for continued replacement of the water main from the intersection of University Street to Grand Avenue, keeping the intersection of 3rd and Grand open.

Brooks Webb, Public Works Director, says things are moving slower than anticipated in the three-block area from Lewis to University. “Contractors are encountering a lot of conflicts. As they dig, they’re uncovering utilities, gas lines, and other things, so they have to move slowly.”

There will be a brief reprieve for the week’s celebrations, though. “We have everything buttoned up for Jubilee Days. The road will be open. Then after the festivities, we’ll be back to work.”

This second phase of construction began in April and is estimated to be complete by October 2023. The project involves abandoning the old water main and installing a new one along the western side of the street. The project will include the replacement of the water main within 3rd Street between Lewis Street to Sheridan Street, moving from north to south. Additionally, water main repairs will be made at the 3rd Street and Fetterman Street intersection.
