Halloween is almost a month away, which means one of my favorite events is coming back to Laramie. Ghost Tours of Laramie City is yet again preparing to scare the pants off people who have enough guts to brave the allegedly haunted Wyoming Territorial Prison after dark. This year they are presenting their ghost tour “Terror Behind Stone Walls”.

Tickets go on sale October 1st, and tours often fill up quickly. Tours will be offered on Oct. 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 and 31. Six tours will take place on each tour date, beginning at 7:00 pm with a new tour starting every half hour until 9:30pm.

Tickets are $13 for adults and $10 for children 12 years and under. Keep in mind, the tour is not recommended for children under the age of seven. Tours must be reserved in advance, and tickets must be paid for at the time of the reservation. To get tickets you can stop by the Wyoming Territorial Prison in person, or call 307-745-6161 to reserve your spot with a credit card.

Each tour begins in the territorial park. You will be led by a scary guide, who remains in character throughout the experience, through various buildings at the park. All the while you will be told the often grisly and ghostly history of the area. Actors reenact times of the past, and your guide tells you creepy and apparently true ghost stories.

Next is my favorite part of the ghost tour, a hayride.

This isn’t just any hayride, however. You will take a ride downtown to see some of Laramie’s scariest haunts and learn more ghostly history about the town. Actors are placed around the town to make the experience more realistic. Just be sure to dress warmly for this part of the tour.

Next is the final stage, and what I think is the scariest part of the ghost tour. You get the experience of going into the prison itself. The whole building is very dark, which adds a heightened level of fear. Your guide, still in character, will tell you all about the experiences people have shared within the walls of the prison. Some years even those who have had their own experiences in the building share their tales. There are some great surprises on this part of the tour, so keep your eyes open for spooks and spirits lurking within the prison passageways and cells.

The three part tour lasts about one and a half hours, although if you scare easily it may feel a bit longer. Keep in mind that there is little heat in most of the park's buildings, and no heat on the hayride so be sure to dress appropriately for the tour.

Ghost Tours of Laramie City puts on a great show every year. The best part about this event is that it changes every season. While the format remains the same, stories, actors, skits and even which buildings you visit change every year. Even if you have been on a ghost tour in years past, you can expect a new, fun, and even scary experience this year and every Halloween season for years to come.
