UPDATE:

Cheyenne police say there were actually six medals stolen, including a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, a World War II Victory Medal, an American Defense Service Medal, a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Cheyenne police are trying to track down whoever stole five World War II medals from VFW Post 1881.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the medals -- which included a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal -- were taken out of a storage trailer behind the VFW sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

"Somebody cut the lock, gained access and then stole these items," said Malatesta.  "We're still trying to determine if other items were taken."

Malatesta says police "don't have a suspect at this time," and he's asking anyone with information about the theft to call Crime Stoppers Silent Witness at (307) 638-TIPS.

"It's pretty messed up to be stealing somebody's medals," he said.
