Fire in the Sky Extinguished

There will not be a fireworks display in Laramie this Fourth of July. The City of Laramie has cancelled Fire in the Sky according to Assistant City Manager David Derragon.

A press release sent from the city manager’s office said that dry conditions and significant fire threat were among reasons that members of the city’s fireworks planning team felt that cancelling the event was in the community’s best interest.  The city also pointed out that the company that puts on the yearly fireworks display, Stonebreaker Fireworks Company, was very understanding of the situation, and may help to put on the show at a later date if they can accommodate such changes.

Albany County is currently under fire restrictions and two wildfires are growing rapidly. The Arapahoe and Squirrel Creek fires have both caused evacuations. There is a hotline available for information on the Squirrel Creek fire at (307)721-1801. The KOWB news center will also have continuing coverage of these fires.

The City Manager’s Office and the Laramie Police Department went on to remind that it is illegal to possess or discharge  fireworks, and doing so can lead to a $750 fine.  People caught discharging fireworks may also be held liable for any damages resulting from the fireworks and could even be responsible for the cost of fighting any related fires.

All other Fourth of July activities in Laramie are still a go, including the Firecracker 5K and Freedom Has A Birthday.
