A bill to ban abortions after any point in which an embryo or fetus has a detectable heartbeat has been filed for the 2021 session of the Wyoming Legislature.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Chuck Gray [R-Natrona County]. You can read House Bill 134 here. The bill does include an exception for cases in which continuing the pregnancy would endanger the life of the mother.

According to Medical News Today, a heartbeat in an embryo or fetus is usually detectable at about 5-6 weeks.

Current Wyoming law bans abortions after the age where the fetus is considered viable to live outside the womb. That is generally considered to be around 24 weeks, according to University of Utah Health.

The Wyoming Legislature is scheduled to reconvene for a General Session on March 1 in Cheyenne. That session is expected to run for about a month or so.
