The San Diego State Aztecs defended their title of Mountain West Champions with a 27-24 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday night in Laramie.

Rashaad Penny ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while Donnel Pumphrey added 110 yards and a score. The Aztecs won their 32nd consecutive game when rushing for at least 200 yards in a game.

Wyoming (8-5) took an early 10-0 lead. Cooper Rothe kicked a 46-yard field goal. An interception by Sidney Malauulu put the Pokes at the Aztec 17 yard line. Three plays later Josh Allen threw a 12-yard TD pass to Jacob Hollister.

San Diego State (10-3) scored the next 24 points. Pumphrey scored on a 9-yard run, John Baron kicked a 37-yard field goal and Penny added a pair of 6-yard touchdown runs. That made it 24-10 late in the third quarter.

The Cowboys answered with an Allen to Tanner Gentry 33-yard touchdown strike. The Aztecs got another Baron field goal from 20 yards out. Allen found C.J. Johnson 42 seconds later on a 43-yard catch and run for the game’s final points. Wyoming had two more possessions, but failed on two fourth-down attempts deep in their own end.

Allen threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted twice and fumbled once. UW was also held to 95 yards rushing and went 2-of-13 on third down.

Penny was named the game’s Offensive MVP, while teammate Damontae Kazee was the Defensive MVP. He had two interceptions and six tackles.

Wyoming now waits to see what bowl game they will be play in later this month.
