2A State Basketball Day One Recaps

Teams in Class 2A have their first-round state tournament games on Thursday at Natrona County High School.

These are brief summaries of all the games on day one in order of the schedule.

Girls Final Score: Lusk 33 Rocky Mountain 29

Courtney Rowley had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lusk Tigers past the Rocky Mountian Grizzlies, 33-29, in the first round of the 2A Girls' State Basketball Tournament. Both teams struggled in the first half offensively, as it was 12-9 Tigers at the break. Lusk pushed it to 24-17 after the third. Then, the Tigers held a 30-19 lead early in the fourth before holding off a Grizzlies comeback. Lusk shot 33 percent for the game, while Rocky Mountain shot just 15 percent, 8-54, from the field.

Girls Final Score: Pine Bluffs 57 Kemmerer 30

Team effort by the Pine Bluff Hornets to beat the Kemmerer Rangers. The Hornets shot 46.2% from the field in the win. Savannah Norman led the Hornets with 13 points and seven rebounds. Maddie Fornstrom had 11 points and four assists to her totals for Pine Bluffs. Kemmerer outrebounded Pine Bluffs 32 to 27 and was led by Olivia Nielson who scored 17 points and added 13 rebounds giving herself a double-double.

Boys Final Score: Southeast 50 Tongue River 47

Southeast wins a tight one against Tongue River. The Southeast Cyclones had the lead the entire game despite a tough effort from the Tongue River Eagles. The Cyclones outrebounded the Eagles 48 to 35. Sawyer Anderson scored 13 points, along with Brant Fullmer scoring 11 and contributing 8 rebounds for Southeast. Bodie Herring also added 8 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones. Tongue River was able to get the 3-ball to go down on 8-31 attempts. Braden Mccafferty scored 13 points in the loss for the Eagles.

Boys Final Score: Sundance 57 Rocky Mountain 46

A strong 4th quarter gives the Sundance Bulldogs victory over the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies. Sundance outscored the Rocky Mountain 25-14 in the 4th quarter. Sundance grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and was able to score 27 points off of turnovers. Two players combined for 31 points for the Bulldogs. Kye Taylor scored 16 points and Lane Gill scored 15 points in the win. Despite shooting a greater field goal percentage at 40.0% the Grizzlies came up short. Taylor Winland of Rocky Mountain scored 19 points and added 13 rebounds in the loss.

Girls Final Score: Moorcroft 50 Riverside 36

The Moorcroft Wolves overcome a three-point deficit after the 1st quarter to gain victory over the Riverside Rebels. Once regaining the lead the Wolves did look back as a team effort pushed them to victory as seven players scored at least one basket. Kaylei Petz, Lizzie Peterson, and RiLee Bonauidi led the team in scoring all having nine points. Moorcroft was able to score 18 points off of 3-pointers. Riverside outrebounded Moorcroft but was unable to win. Caroline Schlattman had 14 points and 8 rebounds in the loss for the Rebels.

Girls Final Score: Wyoming Indian 56 Southeast 19

Wyoming Indian scores 43 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarter to beat Southeast. The Lady Chiefs scored 27 points off of turnovers and was 48.9% from the field. Wyoming Indian was led by Sandie Friday who scored 20 points and was a perfect 9-9 from the field. Angela Astorga had 18 points and 7 rebounds for the Lady Chiefs. Southeast turned the ball over 29 times in the loss.

Boys Final Score: Wyoming Indian 72 Pine Bluffs 68

A game with seven total lead changes the Chiefs beat the Hornets. Wyoming Indian capitalized on scoring 25 points off of turnovers. The team also shot 51.8% from the field and hitting 7-18 3-pointers. Austin Hill scored 27 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Derek Soundingsides scored 22 points and also grabbed 7 rebounds in the win for the Chiefs. Justus Golding scored 25 points along with Michael Shain scored 24 and had 7 rebounds and 4 assists for Pine Bluffs as the Hornets come up short.

Boys Final Score: Big Horn 53 Kemmerer 45

The Big Horn Rams beat the Kemmerer Rangers. Big Horn never lost the lead the entire game. The Rams scored 14 points off of turnovers and were able to grab 13 rebounds. James Richards led the way for the Rams with 21 points. Big Horn shot 40.8% from the field to secure the victory over Kemmerer. The Rangers were led by Colter Brunski and Jake Kampman each had 15 points.
